David Willis III: Founder
When I reflect on the first 5 years of being in the insurance industry, I often forget how long I've actually been involved. Since a young age, and as long as I can remember I have seen how much this business has provided for me and my family. It’s funny to think back in middle school and early high school my sights were pretty much set on taking sports as far as I could, and eventually getting into this business and taking it to the top. I always knew I’d take a crack at it and thank God I turned out to absolutely love it.
When I stopped playing baseball in college entering my sophomore year it was back to plan A. I immediately got my license heading into the year of 2020 just before COVID hit. In a time where everyone was freaking out, I had a unique path laid out for me and which allowed me to put my head down and get a head start on my business.
I took some time to enjoy some things and take back what sports took from me which was my freedom. Creating my own schedule and income was all I needed to hear. As a driven person, I just don’t see how any salary could match the compensation that I could just give myself if I put the work in.
In my first month selling life insurance, I made $10,492.82. Exactly that. I had just started my junior year and because of COVID, classes were completely remote. Every single day I used the WIFI in my car to go to my zoom classes and left my laptop running in the car as I ran appointments. At this point, there was nothing being taught in my entrepreneur classes that could compare to what I was already teaching my self. Within my first year, I was awarded rookie and manager of the year while simultaneously training some of my best friends in the business all while being a full time student!
I graduated from James Madison University with a communication degree and a minor in entrepreneurship, and up until my last two years I had always looked at school as something that has held me back. Simply put, JMU changed my life and my perspective on time and opportunity. I met so many amazing people and connections that I utilize to this day. Being able to experience both sides of college as an athlete and a student in college will go down as a defining moment for me.
However, fast forward a few years - I still don’t know where my degree would get me.
I wrote a personal best of $321,600 in paid issue premium my first full year out of college (2023), was the youngest to qualify for one of my main carriers incentive trips with over $150,000 paid issue premium with that carrier alone, and made the top 40 agent club at 23.
